Subject: Should you tell him how you feel?
Feature: You like him; you want to let him know. But is it a good idea to actually tell him?
Writer: Melissa Field

If there's one situation guaranteed to cause a girl a sleepless night or two then it's the big 'should I tell him how I feel' question. Yikes, just thinking about it is causing us here at BG to break into a cold sweat. So what to do? Should you bare your soul, tell him that you like him (and risk eternal humiliation and rejection) or take a chance, spill the beans (and potentially live happily ever after with the lad of your dreams?)

In a bid to find the best solution to this eternal dilemma, we asked the guys themselves what they thought...

"I think it's great when a girl tells you how she feels about you. Normally it's up to us guys to make all the running when it comes to relationships so having a girl tell you that she's got feelings for you is cool."
James, 16, Kembangan.

"It's good for a girl to tell you how she feels, if you feel the same way about her. If you don't fancy her, it's pretty embarrassing for both you and her but I don't think many girls would speak up unless they knew they were in with a chance!"
Thomas, 17, Bukit Timah.

"I would love it if a girl told me she liked me. It's a compliment isn't it and everyone likes receiving those. Even if I didn't fancy her, I'd still be pleased, I'd just have to let her down gently!"
Danny, 16, Choa Chu Kang.

So it seems that the guys give the thumbs up to speaking up. But what's the best way to do it?
  • Don't tell him while he's hanging around with his friends - they'll try and take the mickey and both you and he will be embarrassed. Wait until you're alone and let him know then.
  • Don't scare him by declaring undying love. Simply let him know you think he's cool.
  • Send him a card - but again, don't scare him with anything too over the top. A cool postcard with a simple note is fine.
However a word of warning. Revealing your true feelings is a risky business so if you want to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation, it's probably best to do it only if you think he's got some kind of feelings towards you in return. Can you trust this guy not to tell all his friends what you've said and/or make you the laughing stock of the school, just because you had the courage to speak up? You need to weigh up whether the benefits (ie: nabbing yourself a new boyfriend) outweigh the disadvantages (possible humiliation and rejection!) But if you think he's worth it then we say, go for it. Good luck!
